Welcome to EdCampLI
EdCamp Long Island is a grassroots, teacher-led event that brings together educators from across the region to share their ideas and expertise. The event is organized and run entirely by volunteers, providing a unique opportunity for teachers to collaborate, learn from one another, and improve their practice.
Since its founding in 2014, thousands of educators, students, parents, school board and community members with a stake in education and the success and well-being of students have attended EdCamp Long Island (EdCampLI) and its partner events, nErDCamp Long Island and EdCamp Leader*. EdCampLI has NO association with any other EdCamp events and receives NO financial support from wealthy donors such as the Gates Foundation or any other large corporations. EdCampLI events are free and rely on the sponsorship of local businesses and educational associations to provide breakfast and lunch for participants.
The term “edcamp” has become synonymous with the “unconference” model of professional development and is now common practice in school districts across the region. They are entirely participant-driven and focused on providing a space for educators to connect, collaborate, and share ideas. The EdCamp model was founded on principles of participant-driven, self-directed professional learning. In keeping with this philosophy, sessions are not pre-submitted, predetermined, vetted, endorsed or promoted by EdCampLI. Participants can choose sessions and conversations they are interested in and are encouraged to leave if they find the session is not one they find useful.
This model has proven incredibly successful, with EdCamp events taking place all over the world and attracting educators from all different backgrounds and disciplines. Many Long Island districts have incorporated this model into their professional development approaches, using it for faculty meetings, Superintendent's Conference days, as well as student, parent, and community forums.
EdCamp Long Island does not promote any ideology or political agenda. Instead, it provides a space for educators to come together and discuss their experiences, share their knowledge, and learn from one another. The organization is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all educators, regardless of their background, beliefs, or experiences. As a result, EdCampLI events have profoundly impacted the quality of education provided to students on Long Island.
* EdCampLI After Dark (professional development after school hours) and Special Education EdCampLI are currently in the planning stages.
